Dr Cunningham has diverse research interests, but has focused principally on the fate, transport, and remediation of contaminants in the environment. His current students are working on projects related to the management of nitrogen and phosphorus during wastewater treatment, the recovery of valuable metals from spent rechargeable batteries, multi-phase fluid flow through porous media, and the storage of carbon dioxide in deep saline aquifers as a method of mitigating global climate change; previous students have worked on projects including clean-up of contaminated soil and water, developing techniques for improved environmental analytical chemistry, and assessing the risk of lead (Pb) in household potable water in Madagascar.
